Some of the worst dating advice I see about a first date is to go for a low-energy environment or, even more lazy, to just go for a drink.

This is terrible advice, and any dating coach worth their salt knows that there is a better way.

The Take Her Along Mentality

The first thing I tell all my clients is to invite people to join you in doing the activities you are already planning.

The following are good examples to have a good time on a first date:

  • A walk down the beach with a coffee.
  • A day shopping for new shoes or shirts.
  • Going to a place of culture, i.e., art galleries, museums, etc.

The reason these make for a great date is:

  • They are a low investment for you.
  • You aren’t going out of your way.
  • Activities give you plenty to talk about, avoiding an awkward silence.

Even better, by doing an activity, you allow your date to relax, show her true self, and have a great time on your date.

Forming a First Date Plan

Unlike many of the dating coaches out there, I don’t recommend planning what you will say or setting up practised lines, which puts a lot of pressure on you and always comes across as inauthentic.

Instead, I am a massive believer in improvisation (more on this later).

But having a plan is important; my recommendation is to create a series of micro experiences called micro dates.

For example:

  • Have a coffee, and make it a takeaway.
  • Go for a walk around a park.
  • Take a shot at the mini-golf as you walk past.

The idea is to be spontaneous and do things that are around, but you can also plan where you meet to be in an area you know has multiple things to do.

This is really important because a confident woman will value experiences shared more than time spent together.

Restrict Your Time on a First Date

A good date tip is to always have something else planned after your date that does not include her.

This means you will not fall into the trap of spending too much time together and losing the excitement of meeting up again for a second date and beyond.

Remember that this is a fun date; you never know if it will turn into a relationship, so enjoy your moments together.

On a first date, the conversational advice most people give tends to lack depth and engagement, leaving the interaction feeling uninspired.

Let’s break down three examples of this poor advice:

While discussing work or daily routines might seem safe, it risks keeping the interaction on a flat, surface level. It doesn’t spark curiosity or allow for emotional engagement, making the conversation forgettable rather than exciting.

This creates an uneven dynamic where one person feels pressured to answer while the other doesn’t contribute much of their own personality or experiences, leading to a lack of genuine connection. Instead, focus on conversation starters that encourage storytelling and mutual exchange.
  • “Stick to Light Topics to Avoid Awkwardness” – This often results in overly safe, superficial chats that fail to leave a lasting impression. Avoiding deeper or more personal subjects can hinder emotional connection and make the date feel shallow.
